Migrate Works with Nest to a Google Account & Re-Link to Alarm.com
In March 2020, Google began notifying remaining Works with Nest users to migrate to a Google Account. Use this guide to complete the migration and then re-link your Nest devices to Alarm.com for continued integration.
Note: Migration and Google account issues are handled by Google. After migrating, you can reconnect your Nest devices to Alarm.com.
Before You Begin
- Install/update the latest Nest app on your phone.
- Ensure you know the primary Google Account you want to use (ideally the one you already use for Google Home/Assistant).
Migrate Your Works with Nest Account to Google
If you received Google’s email, you can click Switch to Google in that email and start at step 5 below.
- Open the Nest app and sign in to your Nest account.
- Tap the settings icon (gear) and choose Migrate to a Google Account.
- Review the migration benefits/details and tap Continue with Google.
- Select the Google Account you want to use (or create/use another account).
- Tap Allow to grant Nest the requested access to your Google Account data.
- If prompted, disconnect old Works with Nest connections and consolidate homes into a unified Google Nest home.
- Review Google’s privacy documents and your Google Account settings, then tap Continue.
- Accept the Google Terms of Service and Nest Terms of Service, then tap Complete migration.
- If you’re accepting a home invitation, review access changes and tap I agree.
- Choose email preferences and tap Next → Done.
Re-Link Your Google (Nest) Account with Alarm.com
Google Accounts don’t support legacy Works with Nest connections. After migration, reconnect your Nest devices to Alarm.com:
- Open the Alarm.com app (or Customer Website) and go to Settings → Manage Devices.
- Choose Add Device → Thermostat → Google Nest Thermostat.
- Tap Begin Installation and sign in with the primary Google Account that owns the Nest home.
- Follow the prompts to authorize and finish linking. Allow a couple of minutes for initialization.
Tip: If you manage multiple Google homes, ensure you’re linking the correct home that contains your Nest device(s).
What to Expect After Migration
- Control of target temperature, thermostat mode, and fan mode through Alarm.com.
- Thermostat schedules remain managed in the Nest platform.
- Advanced Alarm.com rule-based automation for Nest devices is limited.
