SkyBell Doorbell Camera – Live View Troubleshooting
If your SkyBell Doorbell Camera is receiving information and audio but the Live View screen is black, white, gray, or not loading, follow this guide to restore proper video performance.
1. Verify Mobile Device Status
- Ensure the phone is not on an active call. Live View does not display while on a phone call.
2. Compare Wi-Fi vs Cellular Data
- Put the device in airplane mode and enable Wi-Fi, then test Live View.
- Disable Wi-Fi and use only cellular data, then test again.
- This comparison helps determine whether the issue is related to bandwidth or data throttling.
3. Reduce Video Resolution
If the connection is weak, lower the SkyBell’s video resolution to Standard. A stable but lower-quality video often means the router is too far away or the Wi-Fi signal is weak.
4. Verify Internet Bandwidth & Signal
- Wi-Fi signal strength should be 90% or higher. (Check camera placement)
- Internet upload speed must be at least 2 Mbps. (How to test speed)
- Wi-Fi must be 802.11 b/g/n at 2.4 GHz. Slim Line II models also support 5 GHz.
- Encryption should be WPA or WPA2 (WEP also supported on Slim Line II).
- Dual-band routers must separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks into unique SSIDs.
5. Wi-Fi Extender Settings
If using a Wi-Fi extender, ensure the extender has a different SSID than the main router. This allows the SkyBell to properly distinguish networks.
6. Test Another Mobile Device
Try Live View on a second phone or tablet. If the screen is still black, continue with network troubleshooting.
7. Google Fi Users
Google Fi’s VPN may interfere with video streaming. Disable it in the Google Fi app:
- Open the Google Fi app.
- Go to Phone Settings → Fi Network Tools.
- Turn off Enhance Network Beta.
8. Verify Router Settings
- Disable Quality of Service (QoS) and Wi-Fi Multimedia (WMM).
- Check firewall and network rules to ensure they are not blocking video traffic.
- Refer to the router manual or manufacturer if unsure.
