Alarm.com Smart Thermostat is not controlling HVAC properly

The Alarm.com Smart Thermostat may run into an issue where:

  • It is not turning on heat or AC.
  • It only controls heat or AC and not both.
  • Heat or AC run continuously when it should not.

Note: For non-Alarm.com thermostat configuration assistance, contact the device manufacturer.

If the Alarm.com Smart Thermostat is not controlling the HVAC system properly:

  1. Verify the thermostat is communicating properly with the Z-Wave network.
  2. The thermostat is not wired properly. For more information, see Alarm.com Smart Thermostat - Wiring and Configuration Guide.
  3. The power to an HVAC component (furnace and/or compressor) was not restored after thermostat installation.
  4. The tester is not waiting long enough for the compressor delay to expire after switching between heat and cool modes. The expiration time is five minutes by default and will remain that way unless this was changed on the Partner Portal or MobileTech app.
  5. The thermostat is not configured properly for the HVAC system it is connected to.
    • Example: A heat pump may be configured as a normal system, the thermostat may have been set to electric instead of fuel source or set to support a different amount of stages than it should, a fuel pump setting may be incorrect, etc.
      • To verify this using the Partner Portal:
        1. Log into the Partner Portal.
        2. Find the customer account.
        3. Click Equipment.
        4. Click Z-Wave Devices.
        5. In the Z-Wave Devices table, locate the row with the thermostat, then click Down to expand it.
        6. Click Device Commands.
        7. Click Configure Device.
    • Alternatively, look at the settings in the thermostat for other thermostats. Refer to the old thermostat's installation manual for more information on copying the previous configuration.
  6. There is a hardware issue with the thermostat or component(s) of the HVAC system (e.g., the compressor, the furnace, the fan, a fuse).

If the issue is determined to be HVAC system-related, contact an HVAC professional.

For more information on how to view calibration programming and determine if it may be a factor, refer to the thermostat's operation or installation guide.
